Akron Drivers Alert: I-76 & I-77 Ramp Closures Starting May 11 - Avoid Delays! (2026)

Akron drivers brace yourselves: Major disruptions are coming to your morning and evening commutes. Starting Monday, May 11, 2026, the Ohio Department of Transportation will be closing several ramps on Interstate 76 and Interstate 77 for an extended period. These closures are part of ongoing construction projects aimed at improving infrastructure and addressing drainage issues.

The most significant impact will be felt by those using the I-76/I-77 interchange. Specifically, the following ramps will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. until Thursday, May 14:

  • I-77 south at the I-76/Kenmore leg.
  • The ramp from I-76/Kenmore leg north to I-76 east.
  • I-76 west to I-77 south (on Thursday, May 14, starting at 9 p.m.).

Detours have been carefully planned to minimize disruption. Drivers will be directed to use alternative routes, such as I-277 and State Route 261, to navigate around the closures.

Additionally, Fairlawn and Bath Township residents will encounter new ramp closures for I-77 widening starting May 18. These closures will remain in effect until early to mid-July and will affect the following ramps:

  • Ghent Road to I-77 northbound.
  • I-77 north to Ghent Road.
  • I-77 southbound to Ghent Road (remaining closed through mid-May).
  • Ghent Road to I-77 southbound (remaining closed through July).

Furthermore, I-77 between Ghent and Everett roads will continue to experience nightly lane closures for pavement repairs, with an estimated completion date of September 2027.

These construction projects are essential for maintaining and improving the region's transportation infrastructure. While they may cause temporary inconvenience, they are a necessary step towards ensuring safe and efficient travel for all Akron residents.

In my opinion, these closures highlight the ongoing efforts by the Ohio Department of Transportation to address aging infrastructure. While it may cause some frustration, the long-term benefits are undeniable. It's a reminder that progress often requires temporary sacrifices, and these projects will ultimately enhance the reliability and safety of our transportation network.
